Katarina Karppinen (b.1980)
who lives in Leppävirta, graduated from the University of Applied Sciences of Lapland in 2018. Her main tools are the camera and the computer. In addition to photography, video and animation, programming is a key technique of Katarina's works, in which she addresses the condition of nature and ecological issues. She approaches nature in the manner of a scientist by gathering observations and constructing theoretical and computational models of a kind. Her interactive media installation at the M_itä? Biennale of Contemporary Art depicts an artificial closed ecosystem that changes according to algorithms programmed into the work. Using the control unit of the piece, the viewer can, for example, influence the temperature of the ecosystem. Each choice and change affects the work itself in real time. This work presents in a highly concrete way the effects of our choices and actions on our environment.
