Johanna Väisänen (b.1972)
is a media artist from Kuopio. She describes herself as a humanist and looks at the world through the eyes of one. Her work is based on a strong desire to make a statement and take a position. Johanna works with a wide range of media art methods. On the other hand, her works are also narrative and highly similar to short films. She often realises her works as spatial installations, small worlds of a kind that are built by the artist. In Johanna's art, a powerful content-based momentum and dynamic combine precisely with carefully considered and executed visual form. The M_itä Biennale of Contemporary Art at the Kuopio Art Museum features a media installation by her taking as its themes literature, the macro and micro levels of the surrounding world and activism on behalf of animals and nature. Johanna wants to show that nature, animals, plants and different biotypes all have an intrinsic value that is independent of man.
